Hidden Costs of Purchasing Injection Mold Tooling Overseas

Feb 26, 2018

When purchasing injection mold tooling, many companies seek out suppliers overseas for the lowest prices. While tooling from overseas suppliers may be cheaper on paper, there are several hidden factors that may end up costing you more in the end. Here are 5 reasons to buy tooling from a globally competitive supplier in the United States instead.

1. Shipping Costs & Timing

International freight, insurance, document delivery, additional handling costs, and unexpected shipping damage can add up to thousands of dollars on top of your tooling price. While the savings on large, expensive production molds may offset high shipping prices, the cost of shipping on a prototype or smaller production mold can easily exceed the overall price you would pay for a tool in the United States. If you're on a tight deadline, keep in mind that it could take up to a month to ship the tool.

2. Quality Concerns

Offshore tooling is dirt cheap for a reason, whether it's low quality steel or poor craftsmanship. These tooling manufacturers rarely guarantee their work which leaves two choices: purchase an entirely new tool or pay for tweaks.

3. Post-Delivery Tweaks

If you choose to save the tool with post-delivery tweaks, you will likely end up forking over a few thousand dollars depending on severity and size. This is something we see often and try to emphasize to prospective customers who are comparing our quotes to China. There have been many instances in which our toolmakers have fixed poorly made molds for customers who decided to take the cheap route by outsourcing their tool build overseas. Save yourself the extra money and frustration by using a trusted supplier in the U.S. who guarantees their work and will get it right the first time.

4. Customer Service

When issues arise, good customer service can save the day. Problems are much more difficult to solve when there is a language and time zone barrier. The 13+ hour time difference means any questions, concerns or emergency communications won't be responded to until the next business day. Having a reliable, trusted supplier in the U.S. will give the advantage of seamless communication during your business hours as well as peace of mind. At The ERC, we don't have customer service reps. You have the advantage of talking directly to the engineer who is working on your project.

5. Automation

Cheap labor is one of the main reasons companies choose to manufacture overseas. However, in 2018, automation beats even the cheapest labor overseas. Thanks to new automated machinery and our unique modular tooling system, the Engineering Resource Center is able to offer globally competitive pricing on prototypes and small volume production tooling.
